Description Road permanent circuit proposed and built in 1970s. According to The Gel Motorsport its construction started in 1971 but it was soon abandoned due to a lack of money, being completed only in 1978. According to motograndprix.com it was built in 1975 and in 1977 it hosted the first local motorbike race. First international race was F.1 Brazil GP on January 29th 1978. The track was named after Nelson Piquet after he won his third F.1 world championship, in March 1988. This track was used quite a lot by F.1 during 1980s (for winter tests too) but since 1990 it was replaced by the new Interlagos and it become less important. In order to be an important again, in 1996 a new oval track was built in order to host Cart races: in this moment also the old road circuit was modified (changes not shown on my map). On the contrary, short circuit is unchanged until today. I don’t know what it was used for.
The site of the circuit has been choosen to be used for the Olympic Park of 2016 Olympic Summer Games, so the circuit is no longer operational. There are some proposal for a new circuit that should replace it and today (2010) the most concrete is Autódromo Deodoro

Barra da Tijuca
Description Permanent street circuit; at first it was known as Barra da Tijuca circuit, as a previous and very close street circuit used up to 1970. Its construction started in 1971. In 1972 works went on and Brazilian drivers Emerson Fittipaldi and Luiz Pereira Bueno suggestes some changes, new fences and protections and to build a short circuit for Formula Ford races. Works then were stopped for economical reasons and started again in 1975. First map was puiblished at the end of 1972, the second one (the perspective one) in Summer 1976 but it was already old, as the circuit was under construction with the known layout used since 1978. Jacarepaguá name was adopted only few months before inauguration

According to Autosprint, direction is anticlockwise; nevertheless looling at the map at to what I think are run off areas and safety devices, it seems me it’s clockwise

Autódromo Emerson Fittipaldi
Description Proposal dated Autumn 1995 for the new oval and for changing the street track. It’s quite similar to what it has really built in 1996. Originally the track should have been 1.3 mi long (not shown in my map), but an agreement between FISA and Cart dated 1992 allows oval circuits outside USA only if they are at least 3 km - 1.86 mi long
