Autodromo San Cristoforo
Description | Autodromo San Cristoforo at Varano was born in late 1969 with a very short layout that was around a football field. The circuit was built without any sensation by a group of fan; Ing. Dallara stands out from the others in this group. In July Associazione Turistica Pro Varano de’ Melegari (local Tourist Association) organized 1st Summer Trophy, with car races of three different categories: 500, 600 and 875 Monza. In following weeks some more kart, Formula K250 and Formula Monza races were scheduled. This layout was used for a shorth while; as first events were so succesful, in 1971 it was already extended. Two Autosprint articles dates 1970 (the second was published three weeks later the first one) reports two different track length (500 and 650 m), while official website reports 550 m. I don’t know what is right or if all of them are right and meanwhile the track was extended. Map shown here was issued with the second article, who reports 650 m.

Description | As 1970 season was so successful, in Spring 1971 the circuit was completely rebuilt and extended up to 1200 m. This layout too was used for a short while: in March 1972 is was extended again up to 1800 m (layout not shown here). This map must be confirmed: Autosprint write about a double hairpin, but I can’t identify it.

Autodromo San Cristoforo - Autodromo Riccardo Paletti
Description | 24 days for a circuit On Thursday March 2nd 1972, CSAI approved the proposal of the extension of the circuit. Suddenly Pro Loco (local tourist association) found an agreement with the owner of the land and it bought the area, approx 60,000 m² wide. Saturday March 4th they discussed in a meeting whether to start the works immediately or to wait money promised by CSAI. Assembly decided nearly unanimously to start works, that started in the afternoon of the same day. Sunday March 26th the circuit was officially inaugurated. Works done Football field and double hairpin were removed. In front of start/finish line there is an ’S’. Bend on the right in my map was slighlty banked. CSAI had asked to make a second chicane in order to reduce dangerousness of start/finish straight, but after a new analysis original proposal was approved with some minor changes. Layout shown in my map is slightly different from the traditional one used until 2002 and still available; nevertheless I don’t know if on March 26th 1972 the circuit was naugurated had this layout and later modified or if this is an earlier proposal not developed. In 1976 Varano hosted Corsa per il Friuli (Race for Friuli), a race for collecting money and help people living in Friuli, an Italian region just destroyed by a violent earthquake. Many F.1 drivers were there driving Alfa Romeo Alfasud. During the race Ickx went of the track in a bend; after that this bend was named after him. On May 8th 1983 the circuit was named after Riccardo Paletti, a F.1 driver died during 1982 Canada GP

Description | In September 1972 was proposed to CSAI a proposal for another lengthen of the track. The project was done by Romano Meggi and it should have used the ground in front of main straight. The proposal was abandoned until summer 1973, when it was proposed again for the following season. The last problem to be solved was about bureaucracy. It was never developed. Two different articles reports two different length. Looking at the map, it seems the correct one is 2800 m and 3800 is wrong, but I can’t rule out that they are referred to two different proposals.

Description | On January 24th 1982 had been a meeting between track owners and local administration for lengthen the circuit up to 2600 m within 1988. I haven’t any map about this step. In Spring 1987 this proposal was more detailed and also Ickx Bend, Tornantino and the boxes should have been changed. Inauguration should have been on 1988 as well, but this proposal wasn’t developed. In 1991 opposite straight between Nuova Parabolica and the link with the old track was built and used as isolated straight for tests; inauguration of the whole long circuit was scheduled in 1993, but again nothing happened. A new long track quite similar to this project has been inaugurated only on February 22nd 2002
