Description | Osella proving ground, maybe inaugurated in 1982. Track layout is very similar to 1981 layout. At the beginning of 1990s Osella moved from Volpiano to new factory in Basilicata (Southern Italy). The track then dismantled and only few section are still visible on aerial photos | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Osella Test Track | |||||
Description |
Osella moved to Volpiano in 1978. At end of 1979 new factory sheds were built for new Formula 1 team, that raced his first GP in Argentina, on January 13th 1980. Moreover, Osella decided to built also a proving ground like the Ferrari one at Fiorano. Its construction should have been made in Winter 1979-1980 in order to let asphalt become stable. Its a circuit 1100 m long that should be run in both direction, for a total length 2200 m. In order to avoid any of noise problems already happened at Casale Monferrato, some phonometric tests were already made and however cars should have tested using special soundproof silencers. NOTE: I don’t know how "single" 1100 m lap and how "double" 2200 m lap were made. Numbers on my map are copied from the original map: they should mean partial distance, but they seem me insufficient. Moreover, I don’t even know if the longest straight is on the same level of other section of the track or if it’s built on a bridge. |

Osella Test Track | |||||
Description |
Some years after the first project was proposed, in 1977, finally in late 1981 Osella could begin to build his proving ground, nearby his factory at Volpiano. The proposal (here called ’first proposal’) was modified by Mr.Maffezzoli, who worked at Autodromo di Monza, in order to have (see ’second proposal’) a fast banked bend (15°/20°), so that Formula 1 should have entered in second gear and wen out in fourth. The circuit has also a very slow corner to be run in first gear, for traction tests. Finally it has a quik ’S’ for verify rolling and load transfer (sorry for my poor technical English!). Inauguration should have been in March 1982, but I don’t know when it was really done; however, final layout is very similar to these proposals. A complete "lap" is in fact composed by three laps on different courses to be run in sequence. Tra track is quite narrow (6 m approx.) and only one car at the same time can run: for this reason junction between different track layouts is not a problem.
