RSA - SOUTH AFRICA
KYALAMI
SORRY, SOME DATA ARE NOT TRANSLATED YET
Description Track inaugurated on November 4th 1961 and in few years became the most popular South African circuit. In 1968 its length was slighly changed, but I think because of minor changes. In a period when many circuits were charged for their dangerousness, Stewart in 1968 described Kyalami as a safe track very well managed. It hosted F.1 continuosly up to 1985 (in 1981 it was a non championship event), then it was canceled because of political boycott of South Africa due to apartheid. It was considered a difficult track for engines because of its long straight and - moreover - for its high altidude above sea level.

Description In mid 1980s South Africa was isolated because of apartheid. After a great economical crisis, in Summer 1986 there was a proposal for change the track: old main straight area should have been sold as building site and the circuit should have been moved in the opposite direction, on a poor value ground. This proposal was not developed, but in 1988 another quite different layout was really built.

Description In mid 1980s South Africa was isolated because of apartheid. After a great economical crisis, in 1988 this track was deeply renewed (but also in 1986 there was a similar proposal): old main straight area was sold as building site and the circuit was moved in the opposite direction, on a poor value ground. This layout used from 1988 to 1991, when new works begun for South Africa 1992 F.1 GP

Description Compared to previous layout, a chicane was added at the last but one bend, the slight right one where 1988-1991 circuit had a left corner. I don’t know whe it was added, but surely after F.1 GP, held on March 14th 1993. The chicane was then removed before Superbike event held on May 17th 2009
